Pride in Tennis – Statement on LTA Transgender and Non-Binary Policy

Pride in Tennis recognises the sensitivity and complexity that the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) faces regarding this important topic and acknowledges their attempt to clarify their position by means of a new policy. 

However, we are deeply concerned that the new policy effectively excludes a particularly disadvantaged and marginalised cross-section of the LGBTQ+ community from competing as their authentic selves in LTA “Specified Tournaments”.  This approach contradicts the LTA's stated vision of "Tennis Opened Up". 

Despite a collaborative working relationship since our formation in February 2022 as part of our joint mission to promote LGBTQ+ participation, we are disappointed that Pride in Tennis was not actively involved in the consultation process for this crucial policy review. 

Pride in Tennis is committed to amplifying our support for the entirety of the LGBTQ+ community.  We look forward to proactive and constructive collaboration with the LTA to address this exclusionary policy through transparent dialogue, meaningful research and purposeful advocacy.
